Altman Lays Out OpenAI’s Infrastructure Push

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman published a blog post revealing plans to scale infrastructure capable of producing one gigawatt of AI capacity every week. He argues compute expansion isn’t just about revenue, but about unlocking breakthroughs in medicine, education, and more simultaneously - rather than forcing trade-offs.

The timing follows Nvidia’s $100B "partnership" with OpenAI. Together, these announcements cement compute as the true currency of frontier AI.

BTW: OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank also announced five U.S. data center sites for the 10GW “Stargate” project.

Magnum Turns To AI For Ice Cream Innovation

Magnum, preparing to spin out of Unilever, is teaming up with Chilean startup NotCo to redesign ice cream using generative AI. NotCo’s “Giuseppe” model maps thousands of plants at the molecular level to recreate the taste and texture of dairy and sugar - but with lower calories, plant-based swaps and resilience to volatile cocoa prices.

This isn’t just flavor-tinkering. Consumer packaged goods (CPG) giants are starting to outsource food science to algorithms. The shift could sideline legacy R&D teams and blur the line between heritage recipes and AI-designed indulgence.

Google Embeds Gemini Into Play Store Games

Google is rolling out Gemini Live inside Play Store titles. The AI can watch your screen, answer questions by voice and provide in-game coaching without leaving the app.

This may threaten traditional game guides, wikis and YouTube walk-throughs.

For players, it means no more tabbing out for tips; for developers, it could alter pacing and revenue models.

Google also gains yet another stream of player data, embedding AI deeper into entertainment.

Quantifying Weather: Forecasting Becomes A Profit Engine

Seattle-SF startup Planette.ai is using AI to bridge the gap between two-week forecasts and distant climate models. Its systems Joro and QubitCast (built with NASA) compress millions of physics equations to deliver predictions months ahead.

According to reporting in Inc. magazine, Hansi Singh, co-founder and CEO of Planette.ai, said Short-term weather forecasts can really extend only two weeks into the future, and start trailing off in terms of reliability three to four days. But if you want to plan for, say, a trip out of the country or how to plant crops for the next few months, your options are much more limited.

“What you expected to happen at a certain time of year is no longer happening,” says Singh in Inc. “If climate change is affecting us through the weather, then what we need to do is provide awesome weather information to people early enough so that they have the time and ability to plan.”

The company’s Eddy tool offers four-month foresight to consumers, while hedge funds get six.

The implications are enormous: commodity traders, insurers and farmers gain an edge by pricing risk from extreme events. What used to be chaos is now quantifiable alpha.

🐉 Alibaba’s Qwen3 Blitz

Alibaba has dropped six new Qwen3 models in a single week, ranging from a trillion-parameter “Max” model to specialized variants across vision, translation, coding and moderation.

Highlights include:

  • Qwen-Max: near-frontier coding and reasoning power.
  • Omni: handles text, image, audio, and video in multiple languages.
  • VL: leading open visual model, surpassing some closed-source peers.
  • LiveTranslate-Flash: real-time interpretation.
  • Guard: safety moderation.
  • Upgraded Coder: improved programming support.

Unlike Western labs spacing releases, Alibaba’s flood-the-market approach puts pressure on global players by overwhelming with options. Analysts say Qwen is China’s closest approach to the frontier since DeepSeek’s R1.

Scale AI Challenges Benchmarking Status Quo

Scale AI launched SEAL Showdown, a benchmarking platform that ranks AI models based on real user preferences across demographics rather than standard metrics.

Through Scale’s Playground app, volunteers vote on model outputs; results are segmented by age, education and language.

This adds nuance missing from popular leaderboards like LMArena, which don’t capture how different groups experience model quality. SEAL could reshape how labs tune models for specific audiences, not just average scores.

Make Your Own Animated Miniatures

A new tutorial from The Rundown shows how to combine Google Gemini’s Nano Banana tool with Luma Dream Machine to create mini figurines and animate them.

Start by generating a toy-like 3D image of yourself or a product, then animate it with cinematic prompts (camera angles, hand motions, action beats).

The result: eye-catching video assets for marketing or social media that look like stop-motion commercials ... but entirely AI-made.
